1999 – Payne’s Fatherly Advice

With as much heartbreak as Phil Mickelson has experienced in the U.S. Open, this was one moment he will never forget. Wearing a beeper all week expecting the birth of his first child, he lost on the 72nd hole to the late great Payne Stewart, his first of his record six runner-up finishes. Without hesitation, Stewart went over to Phil, grabbed his face and famously said “Good luck with the baby. There’s nothing like being a father!”
