Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. Just ask Jose Maria Olazabal after this unbelievable break he caught on Sunday during the final round of the PGA Tour Champions Allianz Championship. The two-time Masters champ was playing his third shot on the par-5 18th hole from the bunker when he caught it several grooves too low sending it deep into the grandstand behind the green. Miraculously, the ball spit back out like a pinball machine and settled a few feet from the cup. He went on to two-putt for par to finish T-41.
However, the bigger story is the fact the 51 year-old Hall of Famer is playing golf competitively again. In fact, this was his first ever Champions Tour event since turning 50. According to a PGA Champions Tour report, Olazabal has been battling a severe case of arthritis for the past several years and it worsened to the point that he was home-bound for the past year and a half. After months of treatment, he slowly was able to play the game again that has given him so much.
Jose Maria Olazabal thought he’d never play golf again. He makes his PGA TOUR Champions debut Friday.

“I’m coming from a very tough situation with my health the last few years,” Olazabal said. “I’ve really struggled with it. I haven’t been able to practice or play any golf actually. I was feeling under such pain that I couldn’t leave home for a year-and-a-half. So my expectations are mainly to stay healthy at the moment and to get in touch with competition.”
