Mickelson to Spieth: This Is For “Past Champions”

There are certain privileges reserved only for major champions, one of which is access to the “past champions” section of the locker room at the Open Championship. It’s a place where only an elite fraternity of men who survived the challenges of golf’s oldest major get a chance to kick off their shoes and do whatever it is former Champion Golfers of the Year do.

Before last week’s Open even began, a funny situation unfolded between 2013 champion — and professional trash talker — Phil Mickelson and Jordan Spieth who entered the week still in search of the coveted Claret Jug.

According to The Telegraph, the 47-year-old was in his normal playful mood and spotted Spieth walking into the wrong section of the locker room. Phil called out to his fellow countryman, “This right here is for past champions.”

On Sunday evening, Spieth got the last laugh thanks to one of the wildest closing stretches in major championship history. Next year, Jordan will be joining Phil in that special part of the locker room.
