Phil on Caddie Split: “We Both Needed a Change”

Phil Mickelson and his longtime caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay stunned the golf world last week when they announced the end of their storied partnership. While they both provided statements at the time, questions of why inevitably came up considering they were essentially the model of a player/caddie relationship. On Monday, Lefty opened up a little more about the split on the Dan Patrick Show.

“We kind of sensed it,” Mickelson said. “We were hoping that the U.S. Open would be our last tournament together because we started at the U.S. open in 1992…25 years ago.”

“We both kind of talked about it and I think we both needed a change,” he continued.

But Patrick being the pro that he is tried to dig a little deeper by suggesting to Phil that most people find it hard to believe the firing was more than just a “mutual parting of ways.”

“I don’t think it was a firing,” Mickelson explained. “We both talked about it and there wasn’t an incident. I think we both needed a change. There’s really no better way to say it. We both were looking for something different.”

Phil will have his brother Tim on the bag for the remainder of the season. As for Bones, Lefty’s fairly certain he won’t have an issue finding a loop if he wanted one.

“I think he’s going to bring a lot to the table for a number of players.”
