Pro Gives Up Shot at Tour Card for Family

A golfer knows there are few things more important than getting a little white ball into a hole. The only real exception that may take priority is family, and more specifically, the birth of a child. Tour pro David Skinns found himself in that very position this past weekend at the Web.com Tour’s Albertsons Boise Open. He chose his family.

Fighting for his Tour card for the first time in his career, the 35-year-old Englishman secured a spot in the Web.com Tour Finals (also for the first time in his career) with a runner-up finish at the WinCo Foods Portland Open in late August. While he missed the cut the previous week, Skinns posted rounds of 69 and 67 to get himself to -7 and into a tie for ninth heading into the weekend.

Needing a top-five finish or better to lock up his card, Skinn’s was more than halfway to achieving the dream. Then, he got the call that his wife was going into labor. Skinns promptly withdrew and headed back home to Georgia to be with his family.

He will have two more chances to earn his card during the DAP Championship and Web.com Tour Championship, the final two events of the year.
