Welcome to The Fringe, Back9Network’s daily feature created to keep you up-to-date on the best stories happening in golf, social media and pop culture.

With just over a week until the Masters is set to kick off, players are gearing up to take on the first major of the year. Several guys are making an early trip over to Augusta National for some practice, while having a little fun on the way as well. Keegan Bradley “stuck the landing” when he and Luke Donald touched down in Georgia yesterday, standing up in picture-perfect surfing stance as their plane landed.

Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy also made the early trip to Augusta, and it seems as if Fowler was a little busy during their flight.  Fowler was in the middle of doing a Q&A session with his Twitter followers when McIlroy snapped a photo of him, asking for a little company on the plane.

Tweet of the Week

Life is tough for tour pros across the board, but especially Rickie Fowler. When he’s not playing on tour, he’s taking batting practice with the St. Louis Cardinals, driving race cars or doing back flips off of Bubba Watson’s dock. Now, the Red Bull athlete has taken his need for speed and his charmed life to the water. Fowler tweeted this picture of him cutting up the waves on a Red Bull jet ski.

Seriously, I need one of those. You need one of those. Everyone needs one of those. Unfortunately, we are not Rickie Fowler and probably won’t ever have this much fun any time soon.

Phil Mickelson may have withdrawn from the Valero Texas Open with an injury to his right side, but that wasn’t before he provided us with another worldly up-and-down. With one foot in the water, Lefty hit an incredible pitch onto the green and made his putt for birdie allowing him to make the cut. It’s not the first time we’ve seen a save from the water, but it was pretty darn good.

The Greatest Golfer Baseball Ever Saw

We have seen Rickie Fowler take hacks in the batting cage and a bunch of golfers throw out ceremonial first pitches. We’ve also seen former MLB players Ralph TerryJohn Smoltz and Rick Rhoden try their hands at golf professionally.

But the best golfer baseball ever saw is probably a name you’ve never heard of… Sammy Byrd. While Byrd didn’t have the most stellar career in Major League Baseball, he did earn the nickname “Babe Ruth’s legs” for his frequent use as a pinch runner for the slugger. Byrd hit 38 homers, drove in 220 runs and finished his eight-year career with a .274 batting average. In 1936, he retired at age 29 to pursue a career in golf. Read More
