Don’t Feel Bad, Not Even Phil Can Get A Tee Time At Pinehurst

Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina has long been one of the premier golf destinations in the country. Mix in Pinehurst No. 2′s major championship pedigree and you’ve got yourself a marquee course with precious few tee times to go around. So jammed up is the course this time of year that not even Phil Mickelson — the runner-up to Payne Stewart at Pinehurst in the legendary 1999 U.S. Open — can get a tee time right now.

“I’ve tried to get down there three times now, and the course has been booked all three times, so I don’t know when I’ll get down there,” Mickelson said in an interview with USA Today.

Mickelson has famously finished second in the U.S. Open a record six times. A win would give him the career grand slam, making Mickelson only the sixth player in history to complete the feat.

Poulter’s Mystery Procedure

Ian Poulter is one of the most colorful players on the PGA Tour and that’s why we all love to follow him on Twitter and Instagram. He gave us all plenty to enjoy last week, from his Rolls-Royce car problems to his son hitting balls and rocking out to 50 Cent. He also had a “mystery” procedure done, keeping his followers guessing throughout the day:

Ahh, very cheeky, Ian. Very cheeky.

Morgan Hoffmann has always been a colorful player. Whether it’s his Oklahoma State Cowboy orange (like Rickie Fowler) or his propensity for having the funniest wedges on tour, Hoffmann is always a guy you want to pay attention to. This week at the Wells Fargo Championship, Hoffmann’s wedges were sporting quotes from the Will Ferrell NASCAR classic, “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.”

This isn’t the first time Hoffmann has sported Will Ferrell quotes on his wedges. Early this year when then tour was in San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open, Hoffmann’s wedges were stamped with quotes from “Anchorman.” Like everyone else, I’m wondering which Ferrell movie he’ll immortalize next.

Try as he might for 15 years in the golf real estate business to host a men’s major golf championship, Donald Trump had come up empty. Now, he could be holding multiple majors in the next decade, following his purchase of the famed Turnberry Resort and the PGA of America’s announcement that Trump’s Bedminster course in New Jersey will host the 2022 PGA Championship. It’s safe to assume that these major championships will be “the most incredible, amazing, most spectacular” events golf has ever seen, if they’re like anything else “the Donald” has tried his hand at before.

9 Best Argyle Looks in Golf History

Reigning U.S. Open champion Justin Rose shot up the leaderboard Friday into second place at the Wells Fargo Championship, one shot behind leaders Martin Flores and Angel Cabrera. Rose carded four birdies and an eagle to go with one bogey, good for a 5-under 67 on the day.

That wasn’t the lowest score of the round, as Brendon de Jonge posted an impressive 10-under 62 (18 shots better than his 8-over 80 on Thursday), and Kevin Kisner went 6-under. But those gentlemen weren’t sporting a blue-and-pink argyle sweater like Rose, and for that he earns bonus points. Read More
