Pro Snaps Putter, Makes Birdie Putt with Wedge

Sometimes you need to teach your clubs a lesson. Hopefully for your club — and your wallet — that means a simple benching of the club in favor for a different shot type or maybe even a little toss. The putter of European Tour pro Tyrrell Hatton did not receive that kind of mercy.

Playing in this week’s Turkish Airlines Open, the third-to-last event on the Tour’s schedule this year, Hatton was 5-under par for the week and 1-under par for his third round when he came to the par-4 17th hole at Regnum Carya Golf & Spa Resort. Hatton ended up bogeying the hole and his putter took the brunt of it.

With one club fewer than usual in his bag, Hatton faced a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th green. Because his putter was unusable, Hatton opted to pull a wedge from nearly 30 feet.

While there is (criminally) no available footage of Hatton snapping the putter over his knee, observers on the ground filled in the blanks as to why he was putting with a wedge on the last hole of the day.

The birdie on the last hole notched an even-par round for the Englishman.

As crazy as it sounds, Hatton wasn’t alone, either. Some 7,000 miles away, Kevin Chappell was enduring a similar fate with his flat stick. On his 17th hole at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Chappell disposed of his putter into a near-by pond and had to play the 18th hole without a putter.

Chappell would go on to shoot a 4-over par 75. He enters Sunday nine shots back of Beau Hossler and JJ Spaun.
