When it comes to properly maintaining the golf course that you’re playing, one of the easiest and best things you can do is properly repair your divots. Depending on what type of divot you take — a full piece or one that breaks into multiple pieces — it’s important to know the correct procedure for replacing them properly.

If you take a one-piece divot, you should simply replace the divot as if you were putting a puzzle piece back into place. Replace the piece of displaced grass as close to its original placement as possible and even it out with your foot.

However, if your divot breaks into smaller pieces, the ability of the grass’ root structure to take hold again is less likely, so you should use the divot mix or sand provided by the golf course to fill in the divot. Again, make sure the mix fills up the divot so that it’s level with the rest of the ground.
