A golfer’s top priority when they are in a fairway bunker is making sure that they can get out. When you find yourself making a decision as to what club to hit, a simple rule of thumb for judging whether or not you can clear the lip of the bunker is to check the loft of the club by holding the face parallel to the sand.

Being careful not to touch the sand, take the Goldilocks approach: don’t cut it too close and don’t play it too safe; take the club that will clear the lip and get you in position to play a simple next shot even if that means you don’t quite reach the green.
