The Callaway Rogue fairway woods were the first line of fairways to incorporate Callaway R&D’s Jailbreak technology, which features two steel bars that stiffen the body, placing more impact load on the face to promote increased ball speed and distance. This year’s Epic Flash fairway woods include the Jailbreak technology as well as a number of new features.

The most talked-about improvement was the inclusion of Flash Face Technology, an artificial-intelligence optimization designed to help golfers of every level and swing speed get more ball speed and distance. The club’s Forged 455 Carpenter steel construction combines with Face Cup technology to deliver fast ball speed across the face for distance on center- and off-center hits.

Finally, the Epic Flash introduced an Optifit hosel that’s shorter and lighter, allowing for the saved weight to be used to reposition the center of gravity for easier launches and high, long-carrying ball flights.

Getting a complete overall performance picture of the club by using a five-point contact regiment, the Epic Flash tested to be longer than its predecessor, the Rogue, thanks to a lower launch angle and a lower spin rate. By launching about a degree lower and with 200 RPM less spin, the Epic Flash proved to carry longer and roll out farther.

Another key improvement shown by the Epic Flash over the Rogue was a dispersion pattern that was four yards tighter across all five contact points. Most notably, for toe-hits, the Epic Flash stayed right of the centerline by eight yards compared to the 12 yards right of center the Rogue produced.

Overall, the player profile for the Epic Flash fairway wood is one who is looking for a more driving, lower trajectory that flies straighter across all kinds of hits, center and otherwise.
