Having properly-fitted clubs is important, but your swing can change a bit over time and it’s a good practice to check your lie angle on your clubs. While most fitters tend to opt for impact tape to see how the sole of the club is being delivered through impact, there’s a way that you can do some self-checking with only a few old golf balls and a sharpie.

By drawing a line on your golf ball as you would for a putting aid, set the ball down with the line perpendicular to the ground and facing the club. Shortly after putting the line on the ball so that the mark is fresh, take a swing and assess where the line left a mark on your ball. A vertical line in the middle of your club is a good sign, but be sure to hit multiple balls to get a complete picture.
