When faced with a difficult shot, especially one over water or some sort of trouble, most amateur golfers find their focus shifting to the trouble as opposed to where they want the shot to end up. In this situation, take enough club to cover the trouble even with a mediocre shot, and focus on the target and pretend that everything in between you and that target is simply fairway.
