There’s a generally agreed-upon principle in putting that your eyes should be over the ball. The farther away you are from the ball, the more awkward the swing is, and the harder it is to see the line.

The problem is that there is an optical allusion that your brain plays on you that feels like you’re over top of the ball when you’re actually further back. By hanging the putter down from between your eyes, you can make a quick and accurate check of where your eyes are.
