Anytime you’re topping the ball, you first need to say to yourself, “what kind of top is it?” There are two kinds of tops — one of them is a plus top and one of them is a minus top. The minus top occurs when you’re either not getting to the ground and the ball or when you do hit the ball, you’re swinging up so much that you’re catching the top of the ball.

A steep top is when you’re swinging too much down at the golf ball. You might catch the top of the ball, particularly with a fairway wood, and you’ll see the ball hop along the ground. You also may hit a steep top when you’re coming down so suddenly, you pull up to avoid the crash and you just catch the top of the ball that way.
