The TaylorMade M4 fairway wood introduced a speed pocket and a split internal weighting to increase ball speed and loft, but an improved speed pocket and the addition of the company’s Twist Face technology in the M6 fairway wood makes the newer model more forgiving.

If you’re familiar with any of the other TaylorMade reviews, you know that Twist Face is an asymmetrical face that creates different bulge and roll characteristics that cause off-center hits to correct more to the centerline.

With an emphasis on speed, the M6 fairway boasts a multi-material construction, which results in a lower center of gravity and high moment of inertia that is designed to get the ball into the air easier and result in straighter shots for off-center hits.

Getting a complete overall performance picture of the club by using a five-point contact regiment, the M6 fairway had two numbers in particular that jumped out: ball speed and spin rate.

The ball speed two miles per hour greater in the M6 fairway than the M4, which is substantial. With regard to spin rate, the M6 fairway was 500 RPMs lower than the M4. Given the two clubs share similar launch angles, the M6 fairways higher ball speed and lower spin result in noticeable distance gains over the M4.

The M6 fairway’s dispersion pattern tested tighter than that than of the M4 fairway with shots predominantly ending up left of the centerline.

Overall, the M6 fairway compared favorably to the older model in terms of ball speed and spin rate, but it also provides an added component of the left dispersion, which is perfect for the player who battles a slice.
