Halfway houses are usually a place to refuel on the go and gear up for your second nine. However, from a food perspective, not all are created equal. We are talking about the ones that make your lunch on the course an experience.

You won’t find any day-old hot dogs and frozen hamburgers on this list, here are 10 of the best halfway house food in the U.S.

Burger Dog – Olympic Club, San Francisco

The Olympic Club features one of the most well known halfway house foods in the United States. The Burger Dog is essentially San Fransico’s other treat and is a unique part of the club’s famous history. It’s a quarter pound of 85 percent lean ground chuck formed into an oblong patty, cooked medium rare and topped with cheese, red relish, mustard, dill pickles and onions. 

Beginning in the 1950s Bill Parish opened his famous hot dog stand and conveniently called it “Hot Dog Bills” which was located just outside the club’s Lake Course. Golfers got wind of this delectably unique sandwich and would literally walk off the golf course and across the street to get one.

Soon, probably after trying one, the club invited Bill to sell them inside the gates between the 10th and 11th holes. Now there are three stands across the 45 holes that serve this delicacy. If you are fortunate enough to play here, make sure you grab one. 

Peanut Butter, Jelly, and Bacon Sandwich – Fishers Island Club, New York

Fishers Island Club’s signature is their PBJB, simply translated peanut butter, jelly, and bacon sandwich. It is a salty and sweet combination that your taste buds will thank you for. It gives the ocean views from the course a run for their money. 

BLT with Fried Egg – Jefferson Park Golf Course, Seattle

This local Seattle muni features a halfway house like you’ve never seen. Instead of your typical burgers and dogs, they prefer to smoke their own meats. Their signature sandwich is the “be el tee” which consists of thick-cut bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado on toasted sourdough, with an optional fried egg on top. They also make a house-made chili that goes great on fries. 

Jalapeño Burger – Les Vieux Chenes Golf Course, Louisiana

Les Vieux Chenes Golf Course serves this messy pile of goodness and calls it the “famous burger.” It starts with a massive beef patty and is draped in American cheese, bacon, onions, and a pile of spicy jalapeños. It comes with fries and costs less than $10.

Brisket Tacos – Escondido Golf & Lake Club, Horseshoe Bay, Texas

Escondido Golf & Lake Club takes pride in their golf and also their smoked meats. Their specialty is their brisket tacos, which are smoked over white oak and pecans harvested from the property. The meat is brined for two days prior so you know it’s good. You get to choose the toppings, but fresh jalapeños and homemade barbecue sauce usually do the trick.

Snapper Soup – Pine Valley Golf Club, New Jersey

Pine Valley is one of America’s finest clubs, and their snapper soup deserves as many accolades as the course itself. Made from fresh turtle meat, a blend of spices and sherry wine, this soup is one for the ages.

Lobster BLT on Ciabatta Roll – Belgrade Lakes Golf Club, Maine

Hailing from Maine, Belgrade Lakes takes their lobster very seriously as evidenced by their Lobster BLT Special. Served at least once a week, it consists of lobster salad, thick-cut bacon, lettuce and tomato on a toasted ciabatta roll.

Häagen-Dazs Milkshake –  Castle Pines Golf Club, Colorado

Formally a PGA stop for The International, Castle Pines, a Jack Nicklaus design, boasts one of the best halfway house milkshakes in the country. While some mid-westerners will say Muirfield Village reigns supreme, Castle Pines’ half-melted Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream shake has been made in the same Hamilton Beach shake mixer for decades. The Golden Bear knows his dairy. 

Wings – Griffith Park, Los Angeles

Located at Griffith Park on the north side of L.A., you’ll find some of the best wings in town in the middle of 36 holes. At $14 a plate, they’re juicy, tender and bewilderingly crunchy. Basically, any positive adjective that can describe chicken wings applies to these.

Egg Salad and Pimento Cheese Sandwiches – Augusta National

While it isn’t necessarily a halfway house food, there may not be a better bite on the course than the egg salad and pimento cheese sandwiches at Augusta National. For $1.50, you can try one of the most heavenly foods on earth in the most perfect setting in the world. Amen.
