10 Famous Golf Signs

Some of the game’s greatest landmarks are distinguished by some of its most iconic signs.

Here are 10 of the most recognizable in the sport.

Warning Sign – Bethpage Black

Players are greeted on the first tee at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course with this slightly intimidating red and white warning sign, and it is no joke. The first true public course to host the U.S. Open in 2002 has become a fairly familiar stop on the PGA Tour hosting the first event in the FedEx Cup playoffs several times, as well as the 2009 U.S. Open.

It will also be the site of the 2019 PGA Championship and the 2024 Ryder Cup. The most beautiful part is that anybody can play this demanding track.

Augusta National – Members Only

Driving up Magnolia Way wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Members Only sign outside of one of sports most hallowed grounds. In simple green and white, its message is clear. You are in golf heaven.

Open Championship Scoreboard

The iconic yellow scoreboard has been a staple at the Open Championship for years. The manual scoreboard has become almost obsolete since the introduction of digital scoreboards with their flashy lights. However golf’s oldest major sticks to its roots for all to appreciate.

The Bear Trap

PGA National is the home of the Honda Classic and the famous Bear Trap. Designed and named after Jack Nicklaus, holes 15, 16, and 17 are among the toughest three consecutive holes in golf. On the bottom, it reads “it should be won or lost right here.” Spoken like a true 18-time major champion.

Hogan’s 1-iron Plaque at Merion

Ben Hogan’s famous 1-iron that he hit during the 1950 U.S. Open at Merion is one of the greatest shots in golf history and it’s memorialized in a plaque from the exact spot he hit it from. Any time you’re lucky enough to play or walk Merion, make sure to check it out.

Amen Corner

To an average person it’s merely a sign giving directions, but for a golfer, it’s pointing directly to the holy land. Go forth.

Jigger Inn, St. Andrews

The Jigger Inn is synonymous with the home of golf. When you see the sign, you can feel Old Tom Morris’ spirit. If you are ever lucky enough to play St. Andrews, make sure you stop in for some fish and chips and a pint.

17 Mile Drive – Pebble

Perhaps the most scenic drive in golf is along 17 Mile Drive. It doesn’t get much better than cruising along the Monterey coast on your way to Pebble Beach.

Travelers Championship Calligraphy

Calligraphy is one of golf’s lost arts. Those handwritten leaderboards you used to see back in the day just don’t exist anymore, with the exception being the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. They’ve been taking pride in their craft since the beginning.

Pine Valley Golf Club

Upon arriving at Pine Valley Golf Club, members and guests are greeted by this iconic private sign embossed with their famous logo. Pine Valley is known as being one of the finest courses in America.
