SGS Spotlight on Faldo required 2 parts and 3 hours and it still felt like we left out so much. Here’s an attempt to cover some of the topics and events discussed, with a caption guide below. . . . 1. His last major, the 1996 Masters, apologizing to Norman on the 18th green and then meeting with looper Fanny and his “21-year-old flame” Brenna, who asked him what he’d wear to dinner with the ANGC members that night. 2. Early Faldo, first in 1975, the year he won the English Amateur, and in 1977, when he won Euro Tour ROY. 3. At the 1977 Ryder Cup, when he became then the youngest ever to play in the event and made the team just 6 years after picking up a club. Here he watches Jack putt with partner Peter Oosterhuis and with Tom Watson, who he beat in Sunday singles to cap a 3-0-0 weekend. 4. Jackets, garish sweaters, kilts, Wee Woosie. 5. Shaking hands with Ray Floyd, who he beat on the 11th hole to go back-to-back at the Masters. Also at the 1990 jacket ceremony with Hord Hardin and low am, hefty Chris Patton, who was the subject of some Rick Reilly barbs we read during the episode. 6. Through the years with David Leadbetter, a relationship we discuss in detail at the start of part 2. 7. Playing at The Old Course on his way to the 1990 Claret Jug as Norman looks on. He beat Norman by 9 shots in the third round in what was supposed to be a weekend duel between the game’s top players but turned into perhaps Faldo’s greatest performance during his peak run. 8. Scenes from the 1992 Open, his second one at Muirfield, where he was an emotional basket case down the stretch, then sang “My Way” in the trophy ceremony and irked the media by thanking the fans from the bottom of his heart and the press from the “bottom of my bottom.” 9. At the 2008 Ryder Cup Opening Ceremony, where he bothered some by talking extensively about himself and forgot where Graeme McDowell came from. Looking on are Sergio and Westy, who would both criticize Faldo’s captaincy over the years. 10. Celebrating at the 1989 Match Play, which he won during a year he was Euro Tour Player of the Year and BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
