Hideki Explains How His Family Stayed a Secret

If you ever wondered what Hideki Matsuyama is thinking about during the pause at the top of his swing, it might be his family.

According to a Golf Channel report, the 25-year-old Japanese superstar, who finished tied for fifth at the PGA Championship, revealed afterward that he was married in January and that he and his wife welcomed a daughter in July. Despite the constant scrutiny Matsuyama is under before, during and after each round of golf he plays, the Japanese media who cover him every day were completely blindsided by the announcement.

Speaking at his press conference on Tuesday at The Northern Trust, the second-ranked player in the world was asked why he never brought up his new family, and his response was brilliant.

“No one really asked me if I was married, so I didn’t have to answer that question,” he said through his translator. “But I felt that after the PGA would be a good time, because our baby is born and I thought that would be a good time to let everyone know.”

Matsuyama enters the FedEx Cup playoffs this week at number one on the season-long points list, and it appears he’s focused on one thing: winning. 

“Of course, happy about the family. But golf is golf. Once we get on the golf course, that’s what I’m thinking about,” he said.
