Massachusetts Golf Courses, Head Pro Raided By IRS

A pair of Massachusetts golf courses are getting some federal government attention and it’s not because President Obama is teeing it up there. Veterans Golf Course and Franconia Golf Course, both located in and operated by the city of Springfield, Mass., as well as the home of their head pro were raided by the IRS earlier this summer.

MassLive.com had the details of what the IRS wants with a pair of local golf courses and the man who runs them.

The city has hired a Wakefield accounting firm for an outside audit of the city’s two municipal golf courses following a raid at the courses a month ago by Internal Revenue Service agents.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, in a prepared release, said the city has hired Powers and Sullivan, LLC, for the audit of the Veterans Memorial Golf Course on South Branch Parkway and Franconia Golf Course on Dwight Road.

The review will include the city’s contract with Kennedy Golf Management Inc., which has provided golf pro and other services at the two golf courses since 2011 under city contracts.

“As I had requested, this independent outside audit combines with our ongoing internal review and with our full cooperation with outside authorities in order to ensure complete transparency and accountability to the public,” Sarno said in a prepared release.

The audit is expected to cost between $16,500 and $33,000, and should be completed on or about Sept. 30, Sarno said.

On July 28, agents seized boxes of materials form both pro shops and the homes in East Longmeadow and Cape Cod owned by city-hired golf pro Kevin Kennedy Jr., president of Kennedy Golf Management.

Powers and Sullivan, LLC is is the city’s current external auditing firm, and has extensive experience in auditing municipalities in Massachusetts, including golf operations, according to the city’s announcement.
