Skratch Presents “Sheep Golf”

Golf is a game of history and tradition, but behind all of the rules and etiquette are players out on the course to get away from the stress and pressure of their everyday lives. Partnering with our friends at Skratch, SxS is proud to bring you “The Shank brought to you by Skratch,” a look at the lighter side of the game each week. As the folks at Skratch say, “It’s just golf. Try not to take it so seriously”

The beauty of the game of golf isn’t always atheistic; it can be the company you keep, the opportunity for levity or the simple joy of swinging the club. At Balhepburn Golf Course in New York Mills, Minnesota, a sheep farm has been transformed into a golf course that harkens thoughts of Scotland moreso than Hazeltine or any other famous Minnesota course.

In the second season of Adventures in Golf, Erik Anders Lang headed to the Valhalla Farms, owned and operated by Howard and Lou LeGreid. Howard spent 35 years developing a 9-hole golf course on the property and named it after his wife’s Scottish roots, calling it Balhepburn Golf Course.

The course is situated on a sheep farm, which comes with all the good and bad that come with grazing animals. As a result, LeGeid fenced in the greens a la North Beriwck to keep the droppings off of the putting surfaces. Similarly, the course has some interesting local rules that include a 5-stroke penalty for climbing a fenceh and a 10-shot penalty for leaving a gate open.
