The PGA Tour returns to Torrey Pines this week for the Farmers Insurance Open. If you’re lucky enough to have procured tickets for the week, here are your best bets to help enjoy your week in the greater San Diego area.
Best Hotel/Resort: Hilton La Jolla, Torrey Pines
The San Diego area offers some of the most luxurious resorts and nicest hotels in the country, but if you’re headed to Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open, your best bet is Hilton La Jolla, Torrey Pines.
For starters, most of the hotel’s rooms overlook the legendary golf course, which means commuting to and from the course should be a cinch and something you can pull off cheaply (but most importantly, safely) if you’ve had yourself some fun. It also offers plenty of amenities for when you’re not at the course watching the action. The Hilton offers spa packages, a heated outdoor pool, tennis courts and top-notch dining for whatever you’re craving.
Best Bar: The Fringe Presented by Harrah’s Resort SoCal
If you’re looking for a break from the action on the course at Torrey Pines this week, the best place to do that is a The Fringe Presented by Harrah’s Resort SoCal. Located just off the fringe (hence the name) on the 15th hole at Torrey Pines, you can escape the course without having to miss the golf. The Fringe offers both open-air and covered seating, a premium cash bar and multiple TVs to keep you up to speed on the action on the course.
Best Restaurant: Brigantine, Del Mar
If you’re going to be down by the ocean, you may as well indulge in some of the world’s best seafood. And if that’s what you’re looking for, you need look no further than Brigantine in Del Mar. Embracing the lifestyle and atmosphere of the beach town it serves, Brigantine is known for its San Diego-style surf and turf, marinated grilled swordfish as well as the award-winning fish tacos.
If seafood isn’t necessarily your thing, Brigantine still has you covered with classic dishes, great steaks and regionally-inspired specials.
Whether you’re looking for an upscale meal or to just have a beer and put back some oysters at the bar, Brigantine will not disappoint.
Where to Play: Aviara Golf Club
It’s not Torrey Pines, but c’mon — did you really think you’d get to play Torrey the same week the pros were? Wise up. You’ll just have to make another trip to La Jolla to play the course in the future. On this trip, the course for you is Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad.
Located about 30 minutes north of Torrey Pines and the Farmers Insurance Open, Aviara offers its guests a true test of professional golf on one of the top resort courses in the country, which was ranked the best resort course in Southern California. Rack rates are $250 for non-residents with precipitous fall off in price for twilight and midday play.
As the site of the LPGA Tour’s Kia Classic, Aviara may not be Torrey, but it’s certainly the place you want to play while you’re in town.
What to Do: USS Midway Museum
If you’ve got the time while you’re in town, make sure to visit the USS Midway Museum. The USS Midway gives you the chance to tour a real-life United State Navy air craft carrier — and lets be honest, whether you had a grandfather served in World War II or you just friggin’ love “Top Gun,” that is appealing.
Admission is $18 online and $20 in person with discounts available for Seniors, Veterans and children.
