Best Golfers From NCAA Football Top 25 Schools

With all due respect to Christmas and Masters week, the “most wonderful time of the year” is upon us. That’s right, football is back. It’s Labor Day weekend, which means the college kids are back in action and the run for the national championship is on. 

As the PGA Tour winds down its 2013-14 schedule, players are looking forward to the (ever so brief) offseason and the opportunity to plop on the couch and watch their alma maters in action. As it is with the world of sports, some will have more to cheer for than others this fall. Here’s a look at the best golfer (or golfers) from each school in the AP’s top-25 preseason ranking: 

1) Florida State – Jonas Blixt: The Swede has won twice on the PGA Tour; finished fourth at 2013 PGA Championship and T-2 at the 2014 Masters.

2) Alabama – Jerry Pate: Won eight times on the PGA Tour, including the 1976 U.S. Open. 

3) Oregon – Ben Crane: One of the game’s most popular characters; has won five times on PGA Tour, including 2014 FedEx St. Jude Classic. 

4) Oklahoma – Todd Hamilton: Won the 2004 Open Championship. 

5) Ohio State – Jack Nicklaus:  The Golden Bear won 18 majors, including the Masters a record six times. 

6) Auburn – Jason Dufner: The 2013 PGA Champion has won three times on the PGA Tour.

7) UCLA – Corey Pavin: The 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup captain won 15 times on the PGA Tour — including the 1995 U.S. Open. 

9) South Carolina – Kyle Thomspon: Back9Network ambassador; has three wins on the Web.com Tour.

10) Baylor – Jimmy Walker: Astrophotographer has three wins on the PGA Tour in 2014, including AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

11) Stanford – Tiger Woods: Fourteen-time major champion is second on PGA Tour’s all-time list for majors and tournament wins with 14 and 79, respectively.

12) Georgia – Bubba Watson: Two-time Masters champion has collected six wins on the PGA Tour since 2010. 

13) LSU – David Toms: Toms collected 13 wins on the PGA Tour — including the 2001 PGA Championship. 

15) USC – Dave Stockton: One of the game’s greatest authorities on putting, Stockton won the PGA Championship in 1970 and ’76. 

16) Clemson – Lucas Glover: Three wins on the PGA Tour, including the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black. 

18) Ole Miss – Cary Middlecoff: Won 40 times on the PGA Tour, including the Masters in 1955 and the U.S. Open twice. 

19) Arizona State – Phil Mickelson: Lefty has claimed more than 40 tournament wins and five major championships on the PGA Tour; six times he’s been a runner-up in the U.S. Open.

20) Kansas State – Jim Colbert: New Jersey native won eight times on the PGA Tour; finished T-4 at the Masters in 1974. 

21) Texas A&M – Jeff Maggert: Maggert won three times on the PGA Tour, including the WGC Match Play in 1999. 

23) North Carolina – Raymond Floyd: Floyd was one of the game’s greats, winning 22 times on the PGA Tour and collecting four major championships.
