Heartbreaker: Amateur’s U.S. Open Dream Ends with Self-DQ

Heartbreaker: Amateur’s U.S. Open Dream Ends with Self-DQ Facebook/Landon Michelson

You’ve probably never heard of Landon Michelson, but you will be hard-pressed to find a young man with more integrity on the golf course.

According to a report on Golfweek.com, Michelson was one of 55 players to participate in a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier at Quail Valley in Vero Beach, Fla. He got the chance to compete after PGA Tour player Fredrick Jacobson dropped out to play in another tournament this week in Memphis. Everything seemed to be working in young Landon’s favor.

That’s about when Michelson’s luck ran out. In fact, what happened next sounds more like the plot of a heart-wrenching sports movie.

According to the report, Michelson shot a 71 in his second round but signed his scorecard for a 70  – a mistake that would result in disqualification if noticed. Michelson was faced with a choice: disqualify himself or tell nobody and play in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

Michelson decided to take the high road, hoping that there was something a rules official could do to correct a simple mistake. But, rules are rules, and Michelson was immediately disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.

While Michelson could have taken the easy route by not admitting his mistake, he instead chose to uphold the game’s integrity. For that, we salute him.
