You’d be hard-pressed to find a more ardent fan of the Auburn football team than Jason Dufner. We’ve written just a few pieces in this space about his Tigers love.
So it comes as no surprise that Dufner made it a point to honor former Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen, who died June 29 in a single-car accident in Georgia. On Dufner’s golf bag during the Open Championship (if not beyond) will be an orange patch featuring a blue 43, Lutzenkirchen’s number while at Auburn:

Lutzie, as he was affectionately called, was a guest in the Jason Dufner Charitable Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic in March, one of many former Tigers to tee it up and help out the Dufners. A photo from that event was shared by both Jason and Amanda Dufner to express their condolences:

Our hearts are heavy for the Auburn family today. RIP Lutzenkirchen. Family and friends in our thoughts and prayers.
Lutzenkirchen played on Auburn’s 2010 national championship team, and scored 14 career touchdowns, an Auburn record for a tight end. Half of those TDs came in 2011, but his college career ended the next year after undergoing hip surgery. He tried out for the NFL’s St. Louis Rams in 2013, but didn’t make the team.
The 23-year-old Lutzenkirchen was a passenger in a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe and was ejected when the car rolled several times. The driver, 22-year-old Joseph Ian Davis, was also killed after being partially ejected from the vehicle.
