Ryder Cup Odds: Underdog Americans Worth A Wager

The USA is a significant underdog to win the 2014 Ryder Cup, offered at +165 odds at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. The European side is the -185 favorite. While the Ryder Cup isn’t the most popular betting event, it’s one a diligent gambler should consider.

“There are money-making opportunities in the 2014 Ryder Cup,” proclaims Brian Blessing, The Linemakers on Sporting News’ golf handicapper.

To that end, we’re looking for some prices.

“You can’t hit a homerun if you don’t swing the bat,” Blessing says. “I think the U.S. is going to win this thing.”

On paper, Europe looks to be the far more talented side, trotting out the likes of Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson. But, according to Blessing, all the pressure is on the hosts and defending current Ryder Cup holders.  Also, USA captain Tom Watson is “the x-factor.  Revered in Scotland, I think this younger American team will rally around Tom Watson. The last time Tom Watson was the captain across the pond (1993), he got the job done.”

Blessing mentions Patrick Reed and Zach Johnson as Americans who can do some damage this weekend, but “the real key to this is going to be Rickie Fowler. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Tom Watson, when all is said and done, put him head-to-head with Rory McIlroy. He was there in all the majors and in match-play format, Fowler was terrific across the pond the last time they were there.”

So at +165 odds, the recommendation here is to throw a few dollars down on the good ole USA.

How they’re betting in Vegas

Our sentiment is against that of most bettors in Vegas (not necessarily a bad thing). When it comes to making a profit, it seems, gamblers tend to put aside their patriotism.

“We’ve had more support on the Europeans,” SuperBook oddsmaker Jeff Sherman told The Linemakers this week. “I’m sure they’re just betting them because they’ve had such a strong record in this event, especially on home soil – they haven’t lost (at home) since ’93. …

“People just bet where they think they can win at, and that’s what they’re doing here. They just see Europe being a favorite, and they’re supporting them like they are one.”

More betting tips

Blessing isn’t interested in McIlroy, offered at 7-to-2 to be the top European points scorer and 6-to-1 to be the top combined points scorer: “Can’t do it, so much pressure on McIlroy.”

Blessing thinks Fowler presents some value: “I’d be looking at him to maybe be the leading point getter for the Americans.”

And Victor Dubuisson, at 30-to-1 to the be the top combined points scorer, is “not the craziest play in the world.”

How about a player to fade? Stephen Gallacher, says Blessing. “I love this guy, I think he’s going to win a major down the line, but his current form is no good. You may want to look to fade him in matchups. “

The event tees off Friday morning at Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland (2:35 a.m. ET, Golf Channel). Here are the pre-tournament betting options offered the SuperBook.
