The Odds: Rory’s Price Provides Value For Deutsche Bank Field

Hunter Mahan won The Barclays last week, the first of four FedExCup playoff tournaments. However, at 25-to-1 odds to win this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston, he’s still far off the pace that favorite Rory McIlroy (9-to-2) is setting at the LVH SuperBook.

McIlroy leads the FedExCup standings by 89 points over Jimmy Walker (50-to-1), but Bubba Watson (40-to-1, 409 points back) and Matt Kuchar (15-to-1, 661 points back) may be the bigger threats. Those 409- and 661-point deficits may seem incredibly large, but points are quintupled during the FedExCup playoffs, so a lot of ground can be made up in a hurry.

Bettors may find solid value in the prices on some of the game’s top golfers this weekend, once again thanks to Rory’s short number. Adam Scott is second on the LVH oddsboard, but his 10-to-1 price more than doubles McIlroy’s number. Scott is followed by a foursome grouped at 15-to-1: Henrik Stenson, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler and Kuchar. Three of the four performed well at The Barclays, with Day (-12), Kuchar (-11) and Fowler (-9) each finishing in the top 10.

Phil Mickelson (25-to-1) isn’t playing “very inspired golf right now.” And those are his words. He’s unsure if he’ll even play this weekend.

The Linemakers’ lean: “Based on current form, Matt Kuchar is eligible to be a major player at 15-1,” says Brian Blessing, our favorite golf handicapper. “He is super consistent.”

But, Brian adds, Patrick Reed “closed with a 65 on Sunday in The Barclays, and 40-1 is just too juicy a price to pass up – he’s my top selection.”
