The Odds: Tiger Favored at Masters Despite Back Issue

Despite dealing with back spasms and carding a 78 in the final round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, Tiger Woods’ odds to win the Masters were shortened from 7-to-1 last week to 6-to-1 this week at the LVH SuperBook.

Las Vegas bookmakers seem unconcerned with Woods’ lingering health issue.

“He still played relatively well before the back acted up Sunday,” the LVH’s Jeff Sherman said in an email to The Linemakers on Sporting News.

That, and the price on Woods — because of public’s penchant for betting him — is almost never a bargain.

Rory McIlroy, at 8-to-1, remains the second choice for the Masters on the LVH board.

McIlroy can’t seem to finish tournaments either — although his problems don’t appear to be injury-related. One week after collapsing in the final round of the Honda Classic, McIlroy squandered another chance to win at Doral.

There is still time for each to get his game in order, but perhaps it’s time to start looking at some other contenders.

One of those contenders could be Jason Day, who is priced at 12-to-1 and owns a pair of top-10 finishes this season. He finished second in the Farmers Insurance Open and won the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. A thumb injury kept him out of action at Doral last week, but assuming he gets healthy, Day is one to watch when he tees off at Augusta National next month.
