The Odds: Tiger Woods Returns to Action, But Jason Day Favorite

Tiger Woods missed the first two majors of the season following March surgery, but he’ll make his return this week as he tries to knock off some rust prior to the British Open.

He announced his return on his Facebook page last week: “After a lot of therapy I have recovered well and will be supporting my foundation next week at the Quicken Loans National. I’ve just started to hit full shots but it’s time to take the next step. I will be a bit rusty but I want to play myself back into competitive shape. Excited for the challenge ahead.”

At 20-to-1 odds, Woods is the co-fourth betting choice at the LVH SuperBook for this week’s tournament at Congressional. It is the first year for Quicken Loans as the title sponsor for the PGA Tour event that donates its charity money to the Tiger Woods Foundation.

Tiger Woods presser 600

Such a high price on Woods is pretty much unheard of. He’s almost always the favorite before a tournament, although that pattern has not held up entirely this season, as he’s been below Rory McIlroy on a few oddsboards. His odds to win the U.S. Open did spike to 25-to-1 at one point, according to the LVH’s Jeff Sherman, but not many people expected him to play in that event.

Woods has been out of action since March 9 at Doral, where he dealt with pain in his lower back and closed with a 78 for his highest final-round score ever on the PGA Tour.

Woods is seeing 15-to-1 odds at the LVH SuperBook to win the British Open, set for July 17-20 at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. McIlroy and Adam Scott are the 12-to-1 co-favorites for the season’s third major, while U.S. Open champ Martin Kaymer shares Tiger’s 15-to-1 price.

Per PGA.com, the Quicken Loans National will be Woods’ last competitive tournament before the Open.
