Weekend Recap: Horschel Wins Tour Championship, FedExCup & $10 Million

The FedExCup wrapped up in Atlanta making one rising PGA Tour star a very rich man. In France, the LPGA’s final major of the season wrapped up. Here’s a look back at another busy weekend in the world of golf.

Billy Horschel Wins Tour Championship, FedExCup & $10 Million

It was supposed to be a head-to-head battle between two of the game’s hottest players. In the end, though, the world’s top-ranked player fell and an up-and-comer remained in form to capture the season’s biggest purse.

Billy Horschel is your 2014 FedExCup Champion — and a man who’s $10 million richer.

Horschel shot a final-round 2-under 68 to win the Tour Championship at East Lake. It was his second straight victory — coming after last week’s win at the BMW Championship — and earned him the playoff prize, the $10 million purse that goes to the winner.

For Horschel, it’s the biggest win of his career. And the shot at the purse was enough to keep him away from home where his wife sits 38 weeks pregnant with their first child.

For McIlroy, it was a tough Sunday. After starting the day tied atop the leaderboard with Horschel, McIlroy double bogeyed the par-3 sixth and never recovered thanks to Horschel’s steady play. McIlroy tied for second with Jim Furyk.

Chris Kirk, Justin Rose and Jason Day finished tied for fourth place.

Justin Thomas Wins Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship in Playoff

It took extra holes but to Justin Thomas, it didn’t matter. Thomas, a former All-American at the University of Alabama, won the Web.com Tour’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship, beating Richard Sterne in a playoff.

Both players carded final-round 1-under 70s to finish at 6-under and tied atop the leaderboard. The playoff lasted only one hole as Thomas was able to birdie the first playoff hole for his first Web.com Tour title.

For Thomas, the win was a bonus. He’s one of 25 players who have already earned their PGA Tour cards for next season. Another 25 will earn their cards next week at the Web.com Tour Finals.

Paul Casey Wins KLM Open, First Victory As A Father

Paul Casey fired a final-round 66 on Sunday to seal the victory at the European Tour’s KLM Open, but it wasn’t just another victory for the 37-year-old Englishman. It was a first for him … his first win as a father.

“First tournament as a dad and first win as a dad,” Casey said after his round.

The victory came just two weeks after the birth of his first child, and it took a come-from-behind effort. Casey trailed by four strokes heading into Sunday, but a 32 on the front helped him take a one-stroke lead into the final nine holes, and he’d never look back. He finished one shot ahead of Simon Dyson, who finished the tournament with a 65 on Sunday.
