Daly Sinks Putt, Takes Fan’s $100

There are a lot of traditions that go hand-in-hand with The Masters, but there’s one a little off of the beaten path that continues to grow every year: a meet-and-greet with John Daly at the Augusta Hooters location.

Every year, while the buttoned-up first major championship of the year is taking place a mile down Washington Road at Augusta National Golf Club, a different kind of gathering takes place in which the two-time major champion parks his RV in the wing chain’s parking lot and sells merchandise out front.

Daly Signs Crazy Autograph At Augusta Meet & Greet

“I just figured it’s a good way to sell the brand,’’ Daly told The New York Post‘s Mark Cannizzaro. “When I started back in ’97 with the logo, I just figured it was a great way to sell it. We’ve got a great relationship with Hooters. I help them and they help me this week.

“It’s a good week. The money doesn’t really matter to me. It’s just so much fun to be out here, seeing people, getting the brand out.’’

Daly’s “brand” is being the everyman golfer, except he’s an everyman with an ungodly amount of talent, even if he’s not teeing it up at one of the most prestigious clubs in the country this week.

Case in point: a bet he made with a fan this week over a tricky, breaking putt on a temporary green.

Not only did Big John drain the putt with perfect speed, he did so one-handed with a cigarette dangling from his mouth.

Daly accepted his fresh Benjamin and headed back to the merchandise booth as if nothing happened.

What a legend.
