Berger Somehow Saves Par, Defends at Memphis

They say there are no pictures on a scorecard for good reason. Daniel Berger proved that theory once again on Sunday en route to winning the FedEx St. Jude Classic for the second consecutive year. The 24-year-old began the day three shots off the lead but found himself immediately trouble in the deep rough off the first tee. It then went from bad to worse as he hit his second into even thicker cabbage up by the green. After leaving his first attempt well short of the green, the defending champion stepped up and knocked in his chip for the unconventional par to kickstart his day. Not bad when most folks would be potentially staring at double from those lies.

He then parlayed that momentum into a bogey-free 66 which included this spectacular fist pump after taking the outright lead on the 15th hole:

“I’m one-for-one defending titles, so that’s a pretty good stat,” he said after the round

Berger earned his second career win by emerging from a jam-packed leaderboard which at one point included nine players tied for the lead at eight-under par. Even Phil Mickelson had a share of the lead as he made the turn until he ejected two holes later when he made triple bogey at the par-4 12th. Charl Schwartzel and Whee Kim finished tied for second while Billy Horschel and amateur Braden Thornberry, who won this year’s NCAA Individual title, finished tied for fourth.
