Day Using Tiger’s Old Caddie At U.S. Open

Jason Day will be using a caddie at next week’s U.S. Open that is no stranger of winning major championships.

Former bagman to Tiger Woods, Steve Williams will be on the bag for Day as he attempts to win his second major championship and first since 2015.

Day, who has had friend and fellow Australian Luke Reardon on the bag for the last two seasons, confirmed to GolfChannel.com that Williams will take a respite from his retirement to carry the bag around Pebble Beach next week.

While neither Day nor Williams spoke about the longterm relationship on the record, Williams is no stranger to one-off loops. Last year, the New Zealand native carried the bag for Danielle Kang in the LPGA Tour’s McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open in Auckland.

“I needed a local because my caddie isn’t able to be here so I said ‘okay I’ll just hire a local.'” Kang said last year. “Somehow someone said ‘would you mind having Steve Williams on the bag’? I thought it was a joke at first.

“He’s as local as it gets so I think I did pretty well there. He’s a really cool guy. Caddying he knows all the numbers, he knows everything. He is like a walking yardage book. I don’t even need to ask he just tells me what I am thinking.”

Williams caddied for Woods for 13 of his 15 major championships, only missing his first and most recent Masters victories. He was looping for Woods in 2000 when Woods blitzed the field at Pebble Beach, winning by 15 strokes.

Williams most recently and notably caddied for Day’s fellow countryman Adam Scott, but he hasn’t been on the Tour full-time in a few seasons.
