Euro Tour Pro Hits Insanely Lucky 400-Yard Drive

Dean Burmester isn’t a household name even among the most die-hard of golf fans. The 27-year-old South African is doing his best to become more well-known, however. After winning earlier this spring at the Tshwane Open, his first European Tour victory, Burmester made headlines on Friday for a different reason.

Playing in this week’s Volvo China Open in Beijing, Burmester was looking to follow up on a 5-under par 67 in the first round when he got to the 8th hole in his second round, a 558-yard par-5. Already one of the biggest hitters on the European Tour — Burmester averages over 307 yards per drive, which ranks in the top-25 on the Tour — Burmester got not one, but two unlikely bounces to put a short iron in his hands on the 3-shot hole.

Burmester’s drive flew 320 in the air. We know that because the cart path that crosses the fairway is measured off of the tee. What happened next was a second stroke of luck. Not only did Burmester get extra yardage off of the path, he escaped a penalty when his drive then caromed off of a rock in a hazard some 400 yards off of the tee.

The fortunate breaks allowed Burmester to hit the green in two and two-putt for an easy birdie. He entered the weekend at 7-under par, tied for seventh and seven strokes behind 36-hole leader Pablo Larazzabal.
