DeChambeau Gets Unbelievably Good Break

It’s better to be lucky than good, but when you’re playing on the PGA Tour where the margins for error are so small, a kiss from Lady Luck is never a bad thing.

During Friday’s second round, Bryson DeChambeau was the recipient of one of the most fortunate bounces we’ve seen so far in 2019.

Teeing off on the dogleg left par-4 14th hole, DeChambeau pounded a drive straight away that seemed destined for a lie in the rough at best and some potential tree trouble at worst. Instead, the man who plays all the angles hit one that even he didn’t anticipate.

“Just how I drew it up.” 😂 What a break for @brysondechambeau. #LiveUnderPar

“Turn baby. How did that not go left,” Dechambeau said, his internal monologue verbalized for the nearby microphones to pick up. Then came the break of the year.

“Oh, what a kick,” he exclaimed after his ball caromed off of a walkway sign that’s no wider than a baseball. “That’s what I’m talking about. Just how I drew it up.”

The 260-yard drive left him 178 yards into the green, which he played beautifully to 13 feet. However, that’s when his good fortune ran out.

Hoping to capitalize on the great bounce and solid second shot, DeChambeau pounded his first putt six feet past the hole. He would miss the come-backer to card a disappointing bogey 5.

Another bogey on the par-3 17th hole ended his round on a sour note as he posted a 3-under par 67 despite playing his last five holes in 2-over par.
