Jordan Spieth Embraces Golf’s Roots

It may be hard to believe, but there was a time where woods were made of wood and irons were made of iron. Even shafts were made hickory! There was no such thing Trackman or five different sole grinds. Custom fitting didn’t exist. Not to mention the ball was slightly less performing than a four-piece ball that is typically used today. It was a different time back in the 1800s and Jordan Spieth found out first hand.

Earlier this year to help promote the new golf film “Tommy’s Honour,” the two-time major winner, who was born in the 1990s, took a trip with his father to Scotland and used a set of clubs that were around when Old Tom Morris was in his heyday. They even dressed the part as well.

“If anybody could go out and actually play with a golf club that was created by Old Tom [Morris], you’ll realize how skilled those boys were,” said Mark Richardson, Secretary/Manager of the New Golf Cub.

Spieth learned quickly this was a whole different animal asking for a mulligan on the first shot we see.

“All in all, it was very, very difficult to play and I gained a bit more respect for those guys back in the day to do that.”
