Spieth Eyes Claret Jug, Leads By Three

Jordan Spieth is on another major mission. For the third straight day, the 23-year-old phenom finds himself atop the leaderboard at the 146th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale after firing a bogey-free 5-under 65.

On a Saturday where conditions were ripe for scoring and featured the lowest score in major championship history, Spieth put on another links clinic minimizing mistakes and holing clutch putts while stretching his lead to three after 54-holes as he closes in on the third leg of the career grand slam.

The two-time major winner got out to a steady start making two pars, then got things rolling on the par-4 3rd hole when he fired a dart to kick-in range for his first birdie of the day. He then added two more on seven and eight to go out in a clean 3-under 31.

The back side wasn’t much different where Spieth converted a birdie on the par-5 15th and then dropped this statement putt on 18 for another sending a message to the field that he’s the man to beat.

Paired with Spieth was 39-year-old Matt Kuchar who’s vying for his first major, put together another solid Moving Day, however, a costly double bogey on the par-4 16th set him back a bit. In the end, it was a 4-under 66 for the Olympic bronze medalist who will play with Jordan again in the final game on Sunday.

U.S. Open Champion Brooks Koepka and 20-year-old Canadian Austin Connelly are tied for third six shots back. Current World No.1 Dustin Johnson shot a 6-under 64 to get himself in the mix and into a tie for seventh, while Rory McIlroy struggled to get anything going en route to a 1-under 69 and sits at T11 at 2-under overall.

Here are the complete third round highlights from Royal Birkdale.
