Justin Thomas Blows Up, Makes 9 on Par 5

Golf isn’t a game of perfect. As Sam Snead told Hall of Fame baseball player Ted Williams, in golf you need to play your foul balls. Three-time PGA Tour winner this season Justin Thomas proved that statement true on Thursday at the Quicken Loans National.

Entering the par-5 10th hole at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms, Thomas pulled his drive left into a wetland hazard and began a journey that would end up with him getting up and down for a quadruple bogey 9.

To his credit, Thomas played the next eight holes in even par to put himself at four-over par for the day and only two shots outside of the cutline with 18 holes to play before the field is chopped in half.

The difficulty of TPC Potomac is exemplified by the fact that even with a nine on his scorecard, Thomas was still only nine shots back of the first round leader, David Lingmerth. A solid Friday will have Thomas playing the weekend, poised to make a move after surviving a few lashes out of a hazard, a penalty and, as he calls it, a “sneaky shank.”

Here are the complete first round highlights.
