Ko Gets “Wake Up” Call From Former Caddie

The top-ranked player in the women’s game got a wake-up call from a former employee. Lydia Ko finished runner-up in last week’s LPGA Lotte Championship and then promptly fired her caddie, Gary Matthews shortly after signing her scorecard. Matthews was on her bag for just nine whole events before getting the ax, and he isn’t the only one that’s felt Ko’s wrath. Remarkably, this is the 19-year old’s ninth caddie she been through since turning pro. Now, he has some words of advice for the teenager.

“I wish her the best, but she’s gone through so many caddies, she needs to wake up on caddie-player relationships,” Matthews said, according to a Golf Digest report. “Otherwise she’ll just keep doing it.”

Matthews took over Ko’s bag after several major changes she made at the beginning of 2017 which included hiring a new swing coach and changing equipment.

“In all honesty, there is no communication in the whole camp. You never know anything or are told anything,” Matthews said. “I’m like, well, never in 19 years have I been fired and I’m still working for the person. What was so strange for me, we worked unbelievably well in Hawaii. The communication and everything was just phenomenal.”

Kids these days…
