Stomach Bug Wreaking Havoc at WGC-Mexico

Traveling to a another country to play golf is usually a wonderful experience, especially when you are guaranteed a decent paycheck. However falling ill when you are there is never fun. That’s exactly what several players and caddies are facing this week down in Mexico City at the WGC-Mexico Championship.

On Friday, Jim “Bones” Mackay, Phil Mickelson’s long-time caddie, took a WD on the third hole at the Club de Golf Chapultepec due to what has been reported as a stomach virus. He let his boss know he wasn’t feeling well prior to the round and tried to muster the strength to keep going, but was unable to. Thankfully Phil’s brother Tim was on call and relieved Bones of his duties. As reported by No Laying Up, this is only the second time Bones isn’t on Lefty’s bag in his career.

During the first round, Henrik Stenson withdrew after 11 holes citing the same sort of stomach virus. Rory McIlroy was also reportedly under the weather telling ESPN’s Bob Harig that he was “praying to the porcelain bowl” on Thursday morning.

McIlroy, who is playing his first event in six-weeks since returning from a rib injury, seems to be holding it together just fine. After two rounds, the current number three player in the world holds a two-shot lead over a trio of players including Phil Mickelson, thanks in large part due to shots like this:

Get ready for an exciting, and hopefully healthy, weekend!
