Michelle Wie WD’s with Medical Emergency

Trying to overcome a six-shot lead is much more difficult when your appendix feels like it’s about to burst. Unfortunately, that was the situation Michelle Wie found herself in on Sunday before the final round of the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open.

The 27-year-old has battled many injuries over the past few years. Most recently, she withdrew from the U.S. Women’s Open due to muscle spasms in her neck.

Golf Channel’s Will Gray has the details of Wie’s withdrawal for emergency surgery:

Michelle Wie withdrew prior to the final round of the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open and will undergo emergency surgery Sunday to remove her appendix.

Wie, 27, was six shots off the lead after rounds of 71-68-70 in Ottawa.

“Michelle Wie will have surgery to remove her appendix today at Ottawa Hospital,” her agency, IMG, said in a statement. “Further details on her condition will be provided when available.”

Wie is currently ranked No. 30 in the world and has seven top-10 finishes this season, including a T-3 fiinish at the Ricoh Women’s British Open in her most recent stroke-play start. She went 1-2-0 last week during the Solheim Cup, helping the American team retain the trophy.

Wie also provided a status update on Monday morning on social media.
