Phil’s Thoughts On Captain Love, Ryder Cup

Team USA claimed their first Ryder Cup victory since 2008 yesterday in convincing fashion, validating everything that’s happened over the last two years. Shortly afterward the final match ended, they stepped into the media center for their winning press conference and Phil Mickelson basically took it over from there.

Literally, the first question that was asked was directed at Mickelson regarding Captain Davis Love III”s leadership style. Of course, this was in reference to his task-force inspiring comments made during 2014 where he threw the entire team under the bus, most notably Captain Tom Watson. The entire team turned their chairs to him in mocking fashion and held their collective breath.

“We had a great week this week”, Mickelson said, shaking his head. “We had a lot of fun together as a team, and we played some great golf and we are really excited to have won.” Everybody exhaled and had a good laugh.

So when exactly did the U.S. squad start feeling the pressure to win in 2016?

“The pressure started when some dumbass opened his mouth two years ago in the media center,” he said, clearly referring to himself.

“It’s important to start this foundation. It’s great that we had success this week, but it’s not about one year or one Ryder Cup. It’s about a multitude, for decades to come,” he said before being interrupted by a champagne cork being popped. “That’s my cue to shut up.”

This was Mickelson’s 11th Ryder Cup start and went 2-1 in this year’s matches. His overall record is 18-20-7, however, since 2012 he’s 7-3-1 and is Team USA’s leading point getter.
