Fowler’s Relaxed Outfit Draws Attention in Hawaii

The Hawaiian Swing on the PGA Tour is seen by many a Touring pro as a fresh start of sorts. Sure, the wrap-around season is a few months old, but the calendar showing “2018” makes the two events that kick off the year in the Aloha state seem a little extra special.

A young tradition that also seems to be signifying a new year is Rickie Fowler’s wardrobe choices at the Tournament of Champions. Two years ago at the event, Fowler turned heads and started a trend by wearing hightop golf shoes and a pair of joggers.

The fashion-forward choice embraced a trend that had taken hold among the younger demographic, but hadn’t spilled its way into the golf world yet. And to start 2018, Fowler and his clothing sponsor, Puma, again made waves on Maui with Fowler’s outfit during the first round of this year’s Sentry Tournament of Champions.

If Fowler’s jogger/hightop look was a nod to the millennial demographic, his Hawaiian shirt luau-casual dress seems to be a nod to the retired segment of the population.

The shirt and shoes were a part of Puma’ Aloha Collection, which they released this week in conjunction with the tournament. Here’s how Golfweek.com’s Brentley Romine described the line earlier this week.

The Aloha Collection is a head-to-toe assortment of apparel, accessories and footwear inspired by the relaxed vibe and tranquil beauty of the Hawaiian Islands, where Fowler will play this week in the Sentry Tournament of Champions. The collection also pays homage to Fowler’s Japanese heritage, taking traditional Japanese designs and combining them with a fresh take on classic Hawaiian style.

“The Aloha Collection is a fresh, progressive take on traditional golf apparel, without compromising performance, comfort, or freedom of movement,” said Kristin Hinze, global head apparel for Puma Golf. “Rickie talks about his grandfather’s Japanese heritage, which inspired the concept for this collection – blending the best of Hawaii with traditional Japanese prints. The result is a cool Collection that seamlessly transitions from the course to the airport to the beachside cabana in style.”

The combo seemed to work on multiple levels; Fowler shot an opening-round 4-under par 69 to sit two shots back of the first-round leader and his outfit was the top seller in the tournament’s merchandise tent.
