Rickie’s Crazy Bunker Hole Out; DJ’s 413 Yard Drive

The PGA Tour is at Jack’s place for the Memorial this week and we were treated to some early fireworks already on Thursday, the best of which came from Rickie Fowler. Playing the 18th hole at Muirfield Village, Fowler found his ball in a bunker basically dead behind the green with everything running away from him. If you don’t believe us, listen to Nick Faldo literally say “good luck keeping it on the green.”

Not only did Rickie listen, he did one better. Using some wicked hand action, he blasted out of the sand generating a serious amount of spin. After a few hops, the ball grabbed and zipped to the right catching the slope feeding it down to the hole with the perfect pace. Sure it enough it dropped in for the unlikely walk-off birdie leaving Faldo, Gannon and whoever else saw it essentially speechless.

Fowler finished the day with a 2-under 70, rebounding nicely after a triple-bogey on the second, leaving him in a tie for 13th after the first round.

On the flip side, current World No.1 Dustin Johnson had a forgettable day posting a 6-over 78, his worst round in over a year on the PGA Tour. However, after an ugly triple-bogey on the par-3 16th (his seventh hole of the day), he unleashed this nuclear 413-yard drive which needs to be noted.

He drove it so far, he actually left himself a difficult yardage in and ended up making a pedestrian two-putt par. But this tweet sums up what it must be like playing with him.

Jason Dufner and David Lingmerth lead the way at 7-under after both fired rounds of 65. Jordan Spieth, who’s trusty putter appears to be heating up, is only one shot back along with Daniel Summerhays. Phil posted 2-under, while World No.3 Jason Day struggled on his home course with a 3-over 75.
