Sergio Aces the Island Green 17th Hole

The summer of Sergio Garcia is upon us. The 37-year-old Spaniard won his first major championship last month at the Masters, and on Thursday at the Players Championship, he aced one of the most famous holes in all of golf.

Sergio was plotting along on day one at the “Fifth Major” at 3-over par through his first 16 holes. However, one swing on the island green 17th and Garcia was back inside the cut line and in position to make an early move in the second round.

Garcia’s first-round 73 left him six shots back of co-leaders William McGirt and Mackenzie Hughes. Jon Rahm led the group at 4-under par and one shot back with the likes of Louis Oosthuizen, Patrick Cantlay and Francesco Molinari among those who shot 3-under par on Thursday.

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson shot an opening round 1-under par 71, while Rickie Fowler, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson shot 2-under par 70s. Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth both shot 1-over par 73s to tie Garcia, and they will need to make a move on Friday to play the weekend.
