Sergio Takes Frustrations Out On Bag

Sergio Garcia’s fiery personality has both helped and hurt him throughout the course of his career, but an underwhelming 2018 on the PGA Tour is seemingly testing his patience.

Missing his three previous cuts on American soil, which included the U.S. Open, Garcia failed to play the weekend at Carnoustie thanks to rounds of 75-71. The Spaniard was in the field last week at the RBC Candian Open, but again, his poor form saw him clawing late on Friday just to make the cut.

An opening-round 5-under par 67 appeared to have Garcia not only safely into the weekend, but in the heat of things. However, a run of three straight bogeys on his back nine (he played the back nine first) on Friday led to frustrations boiling over.

The first of those three consecutive bogeys came on the par-5 2nd hole where his third shot from the greenside rough ran through the green. Facing a short-sided chip, Garcia chunked it, which led to a burst of frustration that his golf bag got the worst of.

Garcia would go on to shoot a second-round 74, dropping him to 3-under par for the tournament, one stroke off the cutline.

The 2017 Masters Champion will hope to salvage a poor season by playing well over the next month as he attempts to qualify for his ninth Ryder Cup team. He is currently three spots out of an automatic qualifer by virtue of the World Points list.
