SwingU Recap – October 21, 2019

SwingU instructor and social media personality Josh Kelley breaks down the weekend that was in professional golf.

Justin Thomas took home the hardware at the CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges over the weekend, marking the second time the 26-year-old has won the event. The win was also Thomas’ 11th on Tour before the age of 27, which puts him in some rarified air alongside Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth as the only professionals to do so since World War II.

In other news, Brooks Koepka ended up withdrawing from the CJ Cup due to knee issues, but his mouth was in fine working order ahead of the event as he discussed his thoughts on a possible rivalry between himself and McIlroy, more or less dismissing the four-time major champion for his lack of major wins in recent years.

“I’ve been out here for, what, five years. Rory hasn’t won a major since I’ve been on the PGA Tour. So I just don’t view it as a rivalry,” Koepka said bluntly, according to a report from the AFP. “I’m not looking at anybody behind me. I’m number one in the world. I’ve got open road in front of me I’m not looking in the rearview mirror, so I don’t see it as a rivalry.

“You know if the fans do (call it a rivalry), then that’s on them and it could be fun. “Look, I love Rory he’s a great player and he’s fun to watch, but it’s just hard to believe there’s a rivalry in golf. I just don’t see it.”

It will be interesting to see where this “rivalry” goes in 2019-20 on the PGA Tour and beyond.
