Tiger, Rory, DJ Hit 40-Year Old TaylorMade Driver

Golf club technology has come a long way in the past 40 years. Fans, (older) players and media alike enjoy the hypothetical conversation that comes with comparing eras and the technology that was used at a given time.

Celebrating 40 years of TaylorMade Golf, the company got together five of its biggest-named staffers — Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Jon Rahm — and had them hit the very first metalwood from TaylorMade designed in 1979.

As expected with five of the best golfers on the planet, their swings and precision overcame some of the technological deficits with the footage showing all five players hitting the fairway.

The club, the Pittsburgh Persimmon, was designed in 1979 by TaylorMade Golf founder Gary Adams.

Day also had the club out on the range this week at the Wells Fargo Championship with Golf.com’s Luke Kerr-Dineen getting a peek at his Trackman numbers.

270 yards of carry distance created by 164 mph ball speed and 2,509 RPM works in any era.
