Tiger Woods Makes Cancer Patient’s Dream Come True

Tiger Woods is a lot of things to a lot of people, and last week at the Masters he played the role of dream granter to a man who is gravely ill.

Shane Caldwell’s unlikely meeting with Tiger Woods on Thursday of the Masters began with a tweet from one of his stepdaughters, Jordan, asking folks on the social media platform to retweet a photo of her stepfather in hopes that it would garner the attention of one of the most sought-after athletes in the world.

Caldwell has defeated colon cancer twice, but for the last 20 months has been battling lung cancer. He is currently fighting the disease in a Stage 4 capacity.  Jordan’s tweet and Facebook posts went viral, resulting in more than 1.7 million impressions by Thursday of Masters week, according to Caldwell. And it worked.

According to Yahoo! Sports, Jordan went on a Twitter barrage, tweeting more than 500 times and tagging folks from Woods himself to the PGA Tour, TaylorMade Golf and the Masters Tournament itself. In the end, the caddie of Woods’ caddie, Joe LaCava, saw it, as did Woods’ girlfriend Erica Herman.

What’s Next For Tiger Woods?

“By the end, I think they were hearing about it from multiple different angles,” Miller told Yahoo!. “But it was Erica that made it really happen. Her and Tiger both lost their fathers to cancer. So they probably understand a little more than most what it’s like to go through that.”

Prior to Woods’ first-round tee time, he noticed the Caldwells in the Tournament Practice Area, waved, signed his glove and hand-delivered it to Caldwell.

Caldwell was able to see a few holes of Woods’ round before his health forced him to return to the hospital on Thursday before he was scheduled to meet with Woods after the round.

“He’s a hardcore fighter,” Jordan said. “He does not let anything get him down. He’s selfless. He just wants people to care and treat him normally.”

Caldwell got to meet plenty of people who care on Thursday. Tiger Woods just happened to be one of them.
